MVHR Filters & Your Home

Did you know we spend more than 90% of our time indoors?

What is MVHR?

Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) is a continuous running ventilation  system that recovers the heat energy from your wet rooms (bathrooms, toilets, kitchens, etc.) and supplies fresh air to your habitable rooms (bedrooms and living rooms, etc.). The heat recovery unit itself recovers more energy than is used to operate the unit making it an efficient ventilation solution.  Windows can still be opened for cooling, MVHR just provides an alternative means of whole house ventilation. The MVHR unit is not a heating or air-conditioning unit.

How does it work?

Zehnder’s ComfoAir MVHR system works by continuously extracting and supplying air through a network of ducts installed within your home. The unit incorporates a Heat Exchanger that recovers the heat energy from the “extract air” that would normally be lost with other ventilation systems. It also reduces build up of excessive moisture, odours and other pollutants within your property by constantly filtering the indoor air.

What do I need to do?

The system is installed and set up for you. It will run in the background and, dependent on the version, will automatically boost when showering, cooking, etc. You may have an additional means of manually boosting the system through external controls. Provided the unit remains switched on the ComfoAir will work 365 days per year to provide fresh filtered air to your home. Just like a boiler your MVHR unit should be serviced every 12 months. Your installers information can be found in your handover pack.

What happens to your filters?

Just as a vacuum cleaner can become noisier and decline in performance with a clogged filter, so too can the performance of your MVHR unit be impacted by the state of its filters. To ensure an optimum level of efficiency, the filters in your unit should be changed regularly, at a minimum of every 6 months.

Why change your filters?

  • It will run at its most efficient
  • It is economical; a well conditioned MVHR unit will bring your energy bill down
  • Reduces the noise of your ventilation system
  • Keeps mould and condensation at bay, protecting the health of your home and its occupants
